What are the streets, architecture and landmarks of Franklin Hills?

The landmark that defines the neighborhood is the Shakespeare Bridge, officially the Franklin Avenue Bridge. The City named it Historic-Cultural Monument #126 in April 1974 (City HCM list). It was completed in 1926 and designed by J.C. Wright of the City Engineering office (Los Feliz Improvement Association). The bridge carries Franklin Avenue 262 feet between Myra Avenue and St. George Street, across a 35-foot-deep ravine where the Arroyo de la Sacatela once flowed (The Eastsider). It reopened in 1998 after a seismic retrofit. The bridge is also the reason the neighborhood exists in its current form. Franklin Avenue became the main western outlet to what was then an undeveloped tract on the eastern hill.

The Paul Lauritz House at 3955 Clayton Avenue is HCM #784, designated in 2004.
