Streets, architecture and landmarks in Los Feliz Village
Vermont Avenue is the Village's main street and its historic spine. SurveyLA identified the Los Feliz Village Commercial Historic District as a linear grouping of about 15 commercial buildings along the east side of Vermont Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Twelve of the fifteen buildings contribute to the district. Its period of significance runs from 1920 to 1959, and the land was subdivided in 1904.
The district is anchored by the Los Feliz Theater, an Art Deco neighborhood movie theater that opened in 1934. Along the same avenue, the North Vermont Avenue Moreton Bay Fig Trees are City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 940, designated in 2009. The City's monument list also includes the Disney Brothers Studio site at 1748 to 1756 North Vermont Avenue as HCM No. 1308, designated in 2024.
Hillhurst Avenue has its own place in that history. The City's Hollywood historic resources survey records an early streetcar line along Virgil and Hillhurst Avenues. Streetcars are long gone, and the street pattern they shaped is still here.
Los Feliz Boulevard, the north edge, carries two monuments of its own. The cedar trees along the boulevard from Riverside Drive to Western Avenue are HCM No. 67, designated in 1970. The Los Feliz Brown Derby at 4500 Los Feliz Boulevard is HCM No. 843, designated in 2006.
Homes and setting
The Village occupies the ground between Los Feliz Boulevard and Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards. Directly across the boulevard to the north, the land climbs into the hillside this site calls the Los Feliz Hills. SurveyLA calls the heart of that hillside the Los Feliz Heights Residential Historic District, about 317 Period Revival homes between Nottingham Avenue and Vermont Avenue that run north from the boulevard toward Griffith Park. The corner of Vermont Avenue and Los Feliz Boulevard is where the two neighborhoods come together.
To the east and southeast, Franklin Hills begins where the Village ends. The neighborhood council's Franklin Hills district is bounded on the north by Franklin Avenue and Tracy Street and on the west by Commonwealth Avenue and Hoover Street. Those are the same streets that form the Village's east border. Los Feliz Knolls lies on the other side of Commonwealth Avenue as well, running out to Riverside Drive and the 5 Freeway.
