Which streets, homes and landmarks define Los Feliz Knolls?
Much of the east side of the district sits on the Ivanhoe tract. According to L.A. Street Names, the tract was named in 1887 and is filled with streets inspired by the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Rowena, Waverly, Ettrick and St. George all carry names from his work. The City's SurveyLA report for the area to the south adds that the wider district was originally called Ivanhoe, after Scott's novel. Other streets inside Los Feliz Knolls include Ben Lomond, Cedarhurst and Lowry near the boulevard along with Talmadge Street and Griffith Park Boulevard.

One home carries City landmark status. The Sam and Jane Taylor House at 3235 to 3247 Waverly Drive was named Historic-Cultural Monument No. 1216 in November 2020. The Los Feliz Improvement Association page on the house dates it to 1947 and credits the design to J.R. Davidson with grounds designed by Garrett Eckbo.
The southern edge is marked by the Shakespeare Bridge, officially the Franklin Avenue Bridge and Historic-Cultural Monument No. 126. The Eastsider reports that it was designed by J.C. Wright and built in 1926, that its 262-foot span crosses a 35-foot-deep ravine between Myra Avenue and St. George Street, and that it reopened in 1998 after a retrofit.
Two more City monuments sit on the district's edges. The William Mulholland Memorial Fountain (No. 162) stands at Riverside Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard at the northeast corner. The Cedar Trees along Los Feliz Boulevard (No. 67) line the north edge between Riverside Drive and Western Avenue. Both appear on the City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument list.
What are the homes and the setting like?
Los Feliz Knolls is not one kind of terrain. Parts of the district are hillside and parts sit on flatter ground, and the feel of the streets changes from block to block. On the Waverly Drive hilltop, the LFIA describes a view from the Taylor House site that takes in Griffith Park and the Verdugo Hills as well as Glendale and the Los Angeles River.
The housing stock varies by era and by style. The City's survey records homes here from 1908 through 1950, in styles that run from Spanish Colonial Revival and Storybook to Streamline Moderne and Mid-Century Modern. County Assessor records show parcels here recorded under the Ivanhoe tract and under several later numbered tracts. A title report during escrow will name the tract that applies to your home.

Griffith Park lies across Los Feliz Boulevard and Riverside Drive from the north and east edges of the district. The Mulholland Memorial Fountain marks the corner where those two streets meet.
At the northwest corner of Hyperion Avenue and Rowena Avenue, LADWP maintains the Rowena Reservoir ponds, which sit above a 10-million-gallon underground water tank.
